J'ai Dit

By Amanda Keeley

J'ai Dit commemorates Keeley’s participation in the “Lost Spaces and Stories of Vizcaya” exhibition at the Vizcaya Home and Garden in Miami, Florida in 2016. Given access to the private archives of the original owner of the home James Deering, Keeley unearthed an unusual book that documented the texts that were embedded into the architecture throughout the historial museum.

J'ai Dit is an altered facsimile copy of the original publication which transcends both histories and references to Deering’s sense of irony. The project title, J’ai dit, French for “I have spoken” references an inscription at Vizcaya. This text is integrated into the leaded glass doors in the Main Staircase, and it is also a pun on Deering’s name, as the sound of the phrase is the same as his initials, “J. D.”
