Trail Trees
by Logan FazioThe trees featured in this project are located within the Florida Everglades ecosystem — the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States, and the only one of its kind on Earth. One tree stands at 25.4017094, -80.7913958, deep within Everglades National Park’s protected terrain — a living marker of the Everglades’ vast ecological network.
The tree featured on the cover grows near the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, located within Big Cypress National Preserve. Formerly known as the Everglades Jetport, this site now serves as a makeshift immigration detention facility, cruelly referred to as “Alligator Alcatraz.” It is located at 54575 E Tamiami Trail, Ochopee, Florida 34141, and is no longer open to the public.
We respectfully acknowledge that these sites exist on the ancestral lands of the Tequesta and Taíno peoples, now stewarded by the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, who continue to protect its spirit, stories, and ecology.
